Professor Bogdan W. Mach has been associated with the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences since November 1990, when he joined Professor Edmund Wnuk-Lipiński in establishing the staff of the Department of Socio-Political Systems. The political changes taking place at that time inspired him to focus his research efforts on the impact of social structure transformations in Central Europe. He was awarded the academic title of professor by decision of the President of the Republic of Poland on June 14, 2005, and became head of the Department in 2006. Throughout decades of creative work, he was a mentor to generations of Polish sociologists, combining scientific and teaching work. For many years, he was also a member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, as well as important national and international collegial bodies, including the Committee for the Evaluation of Scientific Units and the European Consortium for Sociological Research.
